Set Description
These are all for sale, please email with offer to hhornre634@aol.com if you have interest. U.S. and World Medal Plaques and Plaquettes, composed of Silver, Bronze, Copper and Other Metals. Art and Historical Events are Preserved in Plaque Format, and include some of the Most Artistic Objects Obtainable. History: The Plaquette is a small bas-relief "medal", once used to decorate weapons, furniture, clothes, books and religious objects. During the Italian Renaissance and throughout the 16th Century and the Baroque Period, Plaquettes were greatly in fashion. Many masterpieces were created, usually cast or engraved. The art of the plaque fell into neglect in Europe at the end of the 18th century, but was revived at the end of the 19th century, particularly in France. Art Nouveau artists, for their bas-reliefs, preferred the plaquette because of its free form, which was not as confining as the circular medal. These artists assigned to the plaquette the same meaning and function as the two-sided medal or small plate. In France the style was called Art Nouveau, in Italy it was called Nuovo Stile or "Liberty", in Germany Jugendstil, in Austria Sezession, and so forth. As a collectible, Plaquettes can be relatively inexpensive; they are large enough to see fine detailed work, and they can be collected by type or style, by artist, or by country.
