Medal, Plaquette, c.1920, Bronze, Austria. SCIENCE AND AGRICULTURE, (Plant Science) Medal by Ludwig Hujer 1872-1968. Art Nouveau. Size: 4" x 2.25". Obv. 3 Compartments, left compartment, Scientist working with implements, middle compartment, Man and Woman standing, male holding world globe, woman holding bundled wheat, right compartment, man with large barrel of harvest, ladder, and at bottom right, medallist signature; Rv. Branch with Leaves at left, crown with Austrian twin eagles top center, 6 line inscription below: Dem Verdienste Um Den Osterr Gerstenbau Das K-Ackerbauministerium In Wien (Vienna). Attractive, Scarce. Medallist Info: Hujer was born in Wilhelmshöhe (North Bohemia). He trained at Industrial Schools in Gablonz (Bohemia), had a two year hands-on apprenticeship in Vienna and trained at the Vienna College of Arts and Crafts under Prof. Kühne and Prof. Stefan Schwartz. He traveled and worked in Belgium, France and England from 1895-1898 and worked with the Wyons in London before returning to Vienna. He was a member of the Deutsch-Bohimischer Kunstlerbund or Art Federation. He dedicated himself predominately to the creation of small bronzes, medals, and plaques. Although fairly prolific, his plaques are seldom seen today. Purchased in New York from an estate which sold off a collection assembled over fifty (50) years.
