Pierre Turin, born in 1891 and died in 1968, is a French engraver and medalist. In 1929, for the Monnaie de Paris, he created a new type of currency with the head of Marianne wearing the Phrygian cap encircled by an olive wreath on the obverse, and the reverse ears of corn. His design was used for the ten-franc pieces and twenty francs until 1949 until 1939. Pierre Turin is widely accepted as the most accomplished medallist working in the Art Deco style. He was a pupil of Frederic de Vernon, Auguste Patey and Jules Coutan. His most famous work is the medal for the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts that gave the name to the Art Deco style.
