Set Description

The set features Sede Vacante issue talers, fractional talers, medals, and bishopric pieces from 16th, 17th, and 18th century German States. The Sede Vacante medals and talers were issued by select German States to commemorate the death of bishops and prince-bishops. Only a dozen or more German States issued coins to commemorate the Sede Vacante events over a 250 year period. Set includes pieces from neighboring bishopric states (Brixen, Salzburg, etc) as well as Italy to support the theme. The Zepernick classification system is often used to catalog sede vacante medals and talers.

He issued a few talers in the late 1590s that mocked these families. This particular piece shows a lion, representing the Duke, who is attacked by ten mosquitos (the noble families). The eagle above symbolizes the Emperor who protects and helps the lion/duke. The allusions made on these pieces were by and large understood by the locals at the time.

Attributed to the Zellerfeld mint. KM488, Dav-LS84, Welter-781A, 87mm, 116.30gm. With the denomination "4" stamped at the base of the reverse.

The earliest “multiple thalers” were issued beginning in 1574 by Duke and Prince Julius of Brunswick-Lüneburg and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. The success of the silver mining in the Harz Mountains led to plan to create a permanent reserve fund for the defense of the duchy. Subjects who owned property were forced to purchase one of his new multiple talers struck in a range of denominations from 1 ¼ to 16 thalers. Subjects purchased issues based upon their wealth and they were required to turn them in when requested by the Duke in exchange for debased currency, thus creating an instant source of good silver coinage whenever needed. These large talers, known as “juliusloeser” (Julius Redeemers) or “loeser,” have been popular among collectors since the 18th century. There may have been an element of pride in owning them, since they were a physical sign of the owners’ wealth and artistically beautiful. Collectors were willing to pay up to five times the face value for these coins in the early eighteenth century, not long after they had outlived their original purpose.

Struck by mint master AW (Asmus Wagner).

Included in the set for several reasons:
1 – Erfurt (“Erphesfurt”) was originally one of 3 dioceses established by Saint Boniface in 742 (along with Wurzburg and Bamberg). After 755, considered to be a branch bishopric of Mainz until it gained independence in 1200s. One of largest cities in Germany in early 1500s before slow decline in 1600s; lost independence and brought back under electorate of Mainz in 1664.
2 – Reverse edge inscription: DATE CAESARIS CAESARI ET QUAE DEI DEO (Matthew 22:21 – Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's).
3 – Martin Luther studied in Erfurt in 1501 and was ordained as a priest in the Erfurt Cathedral. Although he moved to Wittenberg in 1511, Erfurt was an early adopter of the Protestant Reformation as early as 1521.

Note: several varieties of 1617 exist. KM16.3 is the famed variety with the alchemist signs on either side of the reverse coat of arms (sulphur of the alchemists & mercury). Numismatic writers have debated the meaning of these symbols for centuries, which some believing they are merely marks of mint master Weismantel.

From 1479, the diocese was administrated by the Archbishops of Magdeburg. While the Halberstadt citizens turned Protestant around 1540, the cathedral chapter elected Prince Henry Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel first Lutheran bishop in 1566. According to the 1648 Peace of Westphalia, the prince-bishopric was finally secularized to the Principality of Halberstadt held by Brandenburg-Prussia. The 1691 taler was issued jointly by the city and the bishopric and represents the last taler issued by Halberstadt. Classified as DAV-5356, Zepernick 317.

View Coin Hamburg - 1620 Wedding 1/2 Taler German States Hamburg 1619-1620 (no date) Silver SILVER - GERMANY LUBECK Gaedechens 1536 (1/2 weight)? (13.90g, 1/2T Weight) NGC MS 61 Rare Hochzeitstaler (wedding taler) of 1/2 taler weight (13.9 g). No date; assumed to be struck in Hamburg circa 1619/20 due to mint mark of Henning Hanses. 44 mm broad taler (brieter taler). Obv: Christ, wearing nimbus crown, standing between bride and groom. Rev: Christ, wearing nimbus crown, seated to left of table, seated around, bride, groom and two other guests; in foreground below, jars.

Attribution of this piece is under review. Originally identified as 1/2 weight version of Behrens 727b due to exact same obv & rev incriptions per 1905 edition of "Munzen und Medaillen Stadt und des Bisthums Lubeck" by Heinrich Behren (page 226). HOMO NON SEPARARET QVOS DEVS CONIVNXIT (man would not separate what God has connected) IESVS CHRISTVS MACHET WASSER ZU GVDEM WEINN IOHA AZ (food blessing). The 1 taler weight is 51mm and 28g in weight with similar design. However, most recent research suggests that this might be 1/2 weight version of Hamburg Gaedechens 1536 (due to Zainhaken mint mark of Henning Hanses). It is possible that NGC misattributed the state on the holder. No definitive answers at this point.

A tauftaler is a taler-style medal minted by the Zellerfeld mint in Harz. Often called a Baptismal taler, these were struck in the 1600s and 1700s and presented by the godfather of a newborn to the family or parents of the baby. Several varieties were produced and are most commonly attributed using the Katsouros or Knyphausen catalogue references. The Harz issued talers are not included in the standard Davenport catalogues.
