Owner Comments:

Scarce taler from Abbey of Corvey dated MDCCXXIII (1723). Struck during seat of Karl von Blittersdorf (1722-1737). The abbey dates to the early 9th century near the time that bishoprics Hildesheim, Halberstadt, and Paderborn were established. Corvey’s first abbot, Adalard of Corbie, was a cousin of Charlemagne. The abbey was granted the right to mint coins on June 1, 833. Remains of St Vitus were gifted to the young abbey in 836 from abbey of St Denis near Paris. Obv: Ornate shield of 4-fold arms, crossed sword and crozier, and 3 helmets with mitre above. Rev: Standing St. Vitus with palm branch, book and bird. Brunswick mint, KM137, DAV-2199.
