Owner Comments:

Ornate medal (tauftaler) struck in the Zellerfeld mint, which operated in Harz from the early 1600s through 1789 when it merged with the Clausthal mint. The large planchet issue (50mm) features John the Baptist kneeling to the left, baptizing Jesus Christ standing facing with arms crossed in the Jordan river. The Holy Spirit doves are featured above. Attributed to mint master Johann Benjamin Hecht. Classified as Katsouros 23.
