Medal, Plaquette, 1923, Bronze, Hungary. TITUS DUGOVICS SELF SACRIFICE (Killing Turkish - Ottoman Flag Bearer at Seige of Nandorfehervar) by Medallist Joszef Remenyi. Size: 50mm x 61mm. Uniface Plaquette. Obv. Dugovics grabbing Ottoman, medallist name to right Remenyi 1923, and the words "Budapesti Budai Torna Egylet 1869 at left; Rv. Blank. Titus Dugovics was most likely a mythical Hungarian Soldier. During a seige on a command of the Hungarians known as Nandorfehervar by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, after ongoing battles, the Ottomons troops succeded in climbing the defense walls. When an Ottoman flag was hoisted upon a gun turret, legend has it that Dugovics immediately grabbed the flag bearer resulting in both the Ottoman and Dugovics plunging from the walls to their deaths. This plaque honors the memory of the defenders. Here it may have been used as an award for gymnastics, picturing the bravery of Dugovics. Purchased in Hungary.
