Medal, Plaquette, c.1930, Bronze, France. LIONS IN THE SAVANNAH, by Maurice Rene G. Thenot (1893-1963). Uniface. Obv. 2 Lions, male and female, looking left, African grasslands around; Rv. Blank. Size: 80mm x 47mm. Weight: 130.5 Grams. René Thénot gained great attention for his series of 10 plaquettes depicting African animals in lively and interesting compositions. They are always in bronze, struck at the Paris mint. Thenot won the Prix de Rome in 1921 and the silver medal at the Exposition Internationale des arts Decoratifs in 1925. He lived in Africa for 8 years before emigrating to Chile. Thénot soon became the chief engraver at the Chilean national mint, retiring in 1958. His series places him in the conversation with Barye and Victor Peter as a great animalier. Purchased in France from Pascal Belletre.
