Set Description
A set of NGC Certified coins that showcase the History of Germany and German Coins.

When I started collecting German coins I was a relative newbie. I just started putting them in their various categories. Along the way I found that German coins express the life of Germany from the time they were minted. Combined with the rich history of Germany and the huge variety of coins I thought it could become an interesting set with relatively inexpensive specimens. Most of the coins in the set were purchased for less than $100.00.

I was disappointed in the competitive sets for German Coins. The States in particular seem to be lacking representation. Unfortunately, I couldn't think of a set for NGC to create that would showcase the history of the coins.

Set Goals
There are so many coins and mints from Germany that I'm not sure I could set a goal. I guess my goal is to keep filling in gaps.

View Coin Hannover (Kingdom) GERMANY - STATES - 2 Kingdom Ag 1/24T 1842 S S HANNOVER KM 178.2 NGC XF 40 A mid-grade coin from Hannover. Minted in 1842 under Carl Schulter. Hannover eventually became absorbed by Prussia. The photo is a little washed out. The coin is darker and has more detail than the photo shows. I need to take new photos.
View Coin Muehlhausen-Thuringia GERMANY – STATES – 1601 – 1800 6P 1767 GERMANY MUHLHAUSEN - THURINGEN NGC MS 61 From the Free City of Muelhausen in Thuringia. By 1767 the seven years war was over and Thuringia was getting closer to being absorbed by the Prussian Empire. It's interesting that the 7 years war was actually several wars lasting longer than 7 years and could have easily been called a World War with the diplomatic alliances that were formed. Muelhausen is a Hanseatic City with history dating back to the 900's AD.

The Coin is rather plain, with a coat of arms and the city name on the Obverse and an Orb with VI and the date on the reverse. Coat of Arms is the Eagle of Muhlhausen on the Shield. The Ruler was Josef II and the coin was actually minted in Clausthal.
View Coin Brunswick-Luneberg GERMANY - FRAC. TALERS 1/6T 1796 PLM BRUNS.-LUNE.-CALEN.-HANN. "REX.F.D" ENDS AT NECK NGC AU 58 A very interesting coin showing the relationship between Hanover Germany and Great Britain. On the obverse is George III, King of England and Elector of Hanover. His grandfather George I was also Duke of Brunswick-Luneberg and the ties between Britain and Hanover began under his reign. The Reverse of the coin is another interesting coat of arms. A pretty good coin considering it's age.
View Coin Bremen GERMANY - STATES - 2 GROTEN 1840 BREMEN NGC MS 65 Beautiful Coat of Arms with the Crown on the obverse. Surrounded by Freie Hansestadt Bremen. This is a tiny coin weighing in at less than one gram.
View Coin Ludwig I (Bavaria) GERMANY - STATES - 2 3K 1847 BAVARIA NGC MS 64 3 Kreuzer minted in Bavaria under the rule of Ludwig I. The coin is rather plain with the coat of arms being the most interesting aspect of the coin.

Ludwig was a strong monarch with a love of women and the arts. One most notable creation of Ludwig I is the temple of Walhalla where Great people of Germanic culture are enshrined. While he was certainly an eccentric, he would be foreshadowed by his Grandson, Ludwig II. Ludwig adbicated rather than submit to a constitutional monarchy that would limit his powers.
View Coin Johann (Saxony) GERMANY - STATES - 2 1NG 1865 B SAXONY NGC MS 62 Minted under the Reign of King John of Saxony. Saxony, like Bavaria, sided with Austria in the war with Prussia. After Prussia's victory Saxony becomes part of the Prussian Empire and a unified Germany begins to take shape. All of this happens under the reign of King John.

This coin is a good example of many German States Coins. It has a very interesting coat of arms on one side and a rather mundane obverse with little decoration at all.
View Coin Ludwig II (Bavaria) GERMANY - STATES - 2 1K 1871 BAVARIA NGC MS 65 1 Kreuzer minted in 1871, the year of German Unification. The Bavarian State was under the rule of Ludwig II (Grandson of Ludwig I) who ruled between 1864 and 1886. Ludwig II lived in a fantasy land and was a major patron of Wagner. He is most famous for his castle Neuschwanstein which has probably done as much for Bavarian tourism as Oktoberfest. Unfortunately Ludwig II's life and reign was cut short. His body was found in a lake along with his doctor. Whether it was suicide or murder is still contested.
View Coin WW I GERMANY - EMPIRE 1/2M 1918F PCGS MS 67 World War I Era This coin has a really nice rainbow tone on it. My highest graded half-mark. Minted in Stuttgart in the last year of World War I. Germany was heading into the Weimar Republic and uncontrolled inflation. My mother has a bank note that was probably brought to the U.S. when her father immigrated from Germany. The denomination is One Million Marks! To go from a half-mark silver coin to a piece of paper worth a million marks in less than a decade is quite a statement.
View Coin Nazi Germany GERMANY - MODERN 1 2M 1933F MARTIN LUTHER NGC AU 55 Nazi Germany

Honoring the 500th Birthday of Martin Luther. Minted in Stuttgart. Martin Luther, most famous for the founding of the Lutheran Church and the protestant reformation also became a rabid anti-semetic. The Nazi party used his writings to help further their cause. It is fitting that they minted a coin honoring him. Fortunately, the modern Lutheran churches don't share his beliefs on Judaism.
View Coin Nazi Germany GERMANY - MODERN 1 2M 1937A NGC MS 62 This coin commemorates Paul von Hindenburg. Hindenburg was a Prussian army officer considered to be the most famous German War hero of his time. He was convinced to enter politics and became Germany's second President. In January of 1933 he was succeeded by Hitler and appointed Hitler Chancellor. Shortly thereafter Hitler took complete control of Germany with the results of course being well known history.

Given that Hitler and Hindenburg disliked each other greatly I think this coin, minted during the Third Reich is representative of the propaganda machine that the Nazi's had in place. Neither party wanted to be associated with each other but Hindenburg's popularity and Military service certainly carried great value to the Third Reich. It's this dichotomy of the coin between Hindenburg and Hitler that drew my interest.
View Coin East-Germany (DDR) GERMANY - MODERN 2 MARK 1956A E. NGC MS 62 An East German coin from the German Democratic Republic (DDR). Minted from Aluminum in 1956. The state symbol is in pretty good condition despite the age and grade of the coin.
View Coin East-Germany (DDR) GERMANY - MODERN 2 5M 1987A E. BERLIN - NIKOLAI QUARTER NGC MS 67 Commemorating the Nikolai Quarter. I Visited the Nikolai Quarter in November 2011. This is the "Medieval" part of Berlin although most of it is rebuilt.
