Medal, Plaquette, 1920's, Bronze, France/Belgium. LE SOIR. By Pierre Theunis (1883-1950). Size: 61mm x 83mm. Weight: 161.65 Gram. Hallmark: Fonson. Obv: A female holding a small statue of a discus-thrower, medallist signature at left edge; Rv. An inscribed tablet set against an oak branch, Inscribed JEU DE BALLE 1948. Theunis engraves female forms with a delicate touch and not overtly sexual. Theunis was an artist, sculptor and medallist, born in Antwerp, Belgium. When he died in Schaerbeek Belgium, the town promptly named a street after him. He created many commemorative medals including Leopold III, Banque de Bruxelles, Banking Reform, and the 1920 and 1935 Olympic Participation Medals. Purchased in France.
