Medal, Large Plaque, Undated, Unsigned, Bronze, France. NEPTUNE LE VERRIER, Grande Medaille Art Deco Astrologique. 180mm x 130mm, Weight: 1420 Grams, Edge Mark: None. Interestingly, there were two famous people with the last name Le Verrier, the name at the bottom of the obverse of this plaque. One Le Verrier being a sculptor with his own foundry, Max Le Verrier (1891-1973), and the earlier Urbain Le Verrier (1811-1877) who was a mathematician and astronomer studying Celestial Mechanics. Urbain Le Verrier is known for being partially responsible for the discovery of the planet Neptune. In mythology, Poseidon/Neptune holds a Trident (which is found in the center obverse of this Plaque). A trident is a three-pronged spear and the weapon of Poseidon, or Neptune, the god of the sea in classical mythology. Was this plaque made by the sculptor Max Le Verrier, as a tribute to a possible famous relative or person with his own last name? A fascinating plaque for study. Description: Large 7" x 5" approx. bronze plaque with hanger at top, zodiac signs in tablet at top edge, Center in frame, Animal head right, trident and glove center, mermaid tail left, 3 stars above, 2 stars below, and LE VERRIER at bottom. At sides near bottom the medal extends over the rectangle with a design similar to a half spearhead; Rv. No Design but heavy cast outline of frame. Extremely attractive and worthy of further investigation. Purchased in France.
