Medal, Plaquette, 1922, Bronze, France. MOLIERE'S THEATRE, 1622-1922 Tri-Centenaire De Moliere, by George Henri Prudhomme. This is an original example from 1922 (Restrikes have the restrike year, usually 1980's, on edge). Obv. MOLIERE, his bust to the right within an oval medallion (engraved in a typical 17th Century way of engraving) In the exergue, two monkeys holding a fantasy shield of comedy, crowned by a mask; Rv. A Lady (personifying Comedy) is behind Moliere who is writing to the left at his desk. While she holds a mask in her left hand, she is crowning him with her right one. In a large exergue: 1622/TRI-CENTENAIRE DE MOLIERE/ 1922. (Third Centenary of Moliere's Birth.1622-1922). Edge: Bronze and Hallmark. Reference Maier 242/281. Near Mint with Original light brown patina. 91.4mm x 67.26mm. Purchased in France.
