Medal, Plaquette, 1908, Bronze, Belgium, PORTRAIT PAUL JANSON - STATESMAN, by Pieter-Jan Braecke (1858-1938). Obv. Portrait of Paul Janson with date, signature of Medallist at upper right corner; Rv. Blank except the famous art nouveau medal company logo of Wolfers Freres. In 1892, Braecke founded with Emile Fabry, Ciamberlani, Victor Rousseau and others, first Salon "Pour l'Art". For ten years, he also participated in the main Belgian and European Salons, including those of the Champ de Mars in Paris. Purchased from Hedley Betts. KNOWN FOR HIS FIGURE WORK, HIS BRONZES ARE IN PUBLIC GARDENS AND PARKS THROUGHOUT BELGIUM. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT HIGH RELIEF BRONZE PORTRAIT MEDALLION OF 19TH CENTURY BELGIAN LIBERAL POLITICIAN PAUL JANSON. THE MEDALLION ITSELF MEASURES 2 5/5 X 2 1/4 INCHES. TO MAKE THIS PIECE EVEN BETTER IT WAS DONE THROUGH THE FAMOUS ART NOUVEAU COMPANY AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY WOLFERS FRERES. STAMPED ON THE BACK.
