1857 25C Quarter Dollar
Judd-188, Pollock-225
Rarity: Low R.7, PR63 BN

Ex Simpson

Struck in copper with a plain edge

Obverse: The obverse is the regular-issue Seated Liberty quarter from 1857.
Reverse: Is from an incomplete die that shows UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. at the rim in a smaller font than on the regular issues, with the letter Q shaped much differently. The center reverse is blank.

Commentary:
The Q in QUARTER is noticeably thin and squeezed, with a long serif descending from the center of the letter. Both sides offer subtle reddish-gold coloration, with a dollop of sage added to the reverse. A few reeding marks are noted in the center reverse, signs of contact with other coins (of the same issue, one might assume), but otherwise the surfaces are splendid and attractive, with a bold strike and excellent appeal.

Struck on both thick and thin planchets, this is another pattern variety that begs for a weight indication on the encapsulation. In earlier editions, the comment on this pattern in Judd was that it "appears to be the first work of Anthony C. Paquet who started working at the Mint on October 20, 1857." Perhaps a dozen exist on both thick and thin planchets according to USPatterns.com, and USPatterns states that this piece might have been a setup piece for Paquet's ten dollar design the following year, Judd-221.

Struck in Silver with reeded Edge

Obverse: Liberty seated on rock, holding shield and liberty pole with cap, 13 stars around, date below base of rock.
Reverse: Eagle with outspread wings, shield on breast, sprig of olive and three slender arrows in its talons, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA QUARTER DOLLAR around.

Comment:
Anthony C. Paquet joined the Mint engraving department in 1857 and almost immediately starting preparing his own designs for several denominations. This example features the normal obverse employed for regular-issue coinage with a reverse design prepared by Paquet. Note especially the lettering that features tall, slender lines with extended serifs. The eagle is of different proportions with larger wings and smaller claws. Also note the delicate features of arrows and olive branch. All of these design elements point to Paquet as designer of this reverse. Although he also prepared other designs, Paquet is most known for his 1861 double eagle.

Saul Teichman of USPatterns.com has identified five distinct examples of Judd-221, including this Bass Core Collection example. This Select proof features gunmetal-blue and golden-olive patina overall with splashes of rainbow color on the reverse.

Struck in Copper with Reeded Edge

Obverse: Similar to the regular-issue Seated quarter of the year.

Reverse: The reverse is also similar in design but bears the With Motto motif on a scroll, as adopted officially in 1866.

Comment:
These Motto patterns were actually struck around 1869 or 1870, according to USPatterns.com. About a dozen examples of Judd-336 are known.
Flashy proof surfaces are magnificently toned in shades of orange, magenta, and violet. Essentially void of contact and carbon.

Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.

Obverse: Similar to the regular-issue Seated quarter of the year.

Reverse: The reverse is also similar in design but bears the With "IN GOD WE TRUST" Motto motif on a scroll, as adopted officially in 1866.

Comment:
The so-called transitional quarter using the reverse of 1866-1891.

These and the other "with motto" patterns of this date and also 1864 and possibly 1865 are actually restrikes made circa 1869 and into the early 1870s and offered with restrikes of other denominations in complete sets. The reverse die used here is the same as on the 1869 and 1870 pattern and trial pieces and 1871 J1093-5 with die rust between the eagle's right (observers left) wing and the olive branch. The Bass foundation example shows extensive rust and may be a very late striking as shown below.

This aluminum J337/P409 has at least 4 confirmed.per USPattern.com

1) Manfra, Tordella,& Brooks 1974 TB - T.R. Walsh
2) Kagin’s Aug 1977 ANA, unknown intermediates, Simpson-Heritage 1/21 - PCGS67
3) Exemplar collection, Heritage 4/13 as NGC65, Stacks&Bowers 8/15 ANA, Legend Auctions 7/18 - PCGS65
4) RARCOA 1/73, Stacks 1/87, possibly the piece graded PCGS64 in their census as it was there prior to #3 being offered.
5) Great Collections 1/30/22 (This piece) possibly the same as #4 (While there are no photos in those auctions the Stacks 1/87 Lot 552 description referred to a row of tiny marks on Liberty which is similar to marks found on this piece)

As there are 5 known of the half dollar and dollar, it is likely another exists. Judd 7th edition notes that one was in the Dr Michal collection which likely is one of above or the 5th piece.

Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Obverse: The obverse is the regular-issue Seated Liberty design of 1864.
Reverse: Paquet's reverse features an eagle and shield, olive, and arrows in the claws. Around, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR below.

Comment:
The fields on each side are deeply reflective and flash strongly through the light gray-rose toning. Considerable contrast is noted also between the fields and devices.

In the auction listing by Goldberg Auctioneers June 2011 they elaborate some history on Praquet as follows:

Paquet did contract work for the Mint in early 1857, and on October 20 of that year joined the Mint staff as an assistant engraver. He remained in that post through early 1864, after which he returned to the private sector, but continued to do important commissions for the government, including two designs for Indian Peace medals. Paquet furnished the letter punches for certain patterns and possibly regular coins as well, one recorded shipment arriving in late May, 1857, although he could have done earlier work as well. Apparently, the same engraver made up punches for various denominations including the dime, quarter, and half dollar. However, these fonts were not used at the time for circulating coinage.

Struck in copper with a reeded edge

Obverse: Struck from the regular obverse die for the Liberty Seated Quarter of the year 1864
Reverse: Paired with the regular reverse die of 1866 with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle.

Comment:
The transitional patterns of 1863, 1864 and 1865 -with motto IN GOD WE TRUST were created as numismatic delicacies after the motto had been regularly adopted (in 1866) for general coinage. Specimens were made available to privileged numismatists and were struck in aluminum, copper, and silver. A full set of transitional patterns consists of the quarter dollar, half dollar, and dollar, with dates of 1863, 1864, and 1865. The method of distribution of these is not clear, but William K. Idler, a Philadelphia dealer who commenced trade in 1859, is a strong possibility. At the Mint these pieces were produced secretly, then filtered out into the numismatic marketplace by insiders who had access to coining equipment.
This piece is deep blue-brown toning overall with some slight golden accents at selected recesses of the design, particularly on the reverse.

Struck I copper with Reeded Edge

Obverse/ Reverse:
Struck using the regular dies of 1867 but in copper

Comment:

While these had been called trials issues it is more likely they were struck for collectors. Only a half-dozen examples are believed known.

The surfaces on this piece show a surprising amount of original red surrounding the devices and within the recesses of the design. No contact marks are observed on either side and the piece is almost carbon-free.

Reverse: The reverse has 25 CENTS in the center, surrounded by a thick agricultural wreath with STANDARD in small letters at the top.

Comment:
This Choice Proof has excellent contrast between the fields and devices, with pale champagne toning. A highly attractive example. Blazing silver white mirrors beam boldly all over. The devices stand out in stark, sharp contrast to the surrounding fields. While some light lines are noted in the fields, the eye appeal is unmarred by unsightly mishandling or splotchy toning. A minor spot at 7:30 and 10:00 on the obverse rim, as well as on the 7 on the date serve as pedigree hallmarks.

Comment:
Judd-878 is part of the curious series of 1870 patterns with an unusual paring of an obverse and reverse that yields a coin without a country identification,. The "Brown Cameo" designation is not common but is accurate. The surfaces are teal and evenly balanced from side-to-side. This series was also struck in silver, copper, and aluminum and with both reeded and plain edges. All varieties are rare. The present piece is tied for the honor of finest certified with an identically graded PCGS specimen (11/22). Both sides are ruby-red and walnut-brown with mirrored fields and boldly struck devices. No detraction are apparent.

Comment:
This trial strike is toned in rich emerald-brown with purple, blue and gold iridescence that comes into view when held at the right angle of light. A sharply impressed and rather striking example of a Quarter in copper.
Auction records since 1972 suggests there appears only 4 unique specimens that have been sold. The 1991 Bowers sale of the Dr. Polis collections only acknowledge 2 at that time while Pollack had only 3 references- 2 of which could be confirmed as Unique pieces

Reverse: A wreath of cotton and corn encircles the denomination 25 CENTS, the word STANDARD inscribed along the upper border.

Comment:
Another Illogical die combinations where there is no reference to the United States.

A predominantly rose-brown example with direct light revealing especially vivid multicolored under-toning that includes shades of red, gold, blue and salmon pink. Were it not for a touch of haziness and a few widely scattered peripheral carbon spots, this lovely specimen would probably have secured a near-Gem grade.

Incredibly RARE with perhaps five known examples, and the present coin is among the FINEST known. Highly reflective mirrors have a blazing finish that contrast against the high relief nature of the elegant obverse design which approaches the CAMEO designation. Only two examples are known, according to USPatterns.com.

1879 Pattern Washlady Quarter
Judd-1591, Pollock-1784.
Rarity: Low R.7. Proof-65 BN+

Struck in copper with reeded edge

Obverse: Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber's Washlady or Society Lady motif with a left facing head of Liberty. Liberty is wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY and ornamented with ears of wheat, cotton leaves and bolls. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the date 1879 is below.
Reverse: An eagle with outstretched wings clutches an olive branch in its right talon and three long arrows in its left talon. The Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed in the field directly above the eagle, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above the motto, and the denomination QUAR DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower border.

Comment:
The Washlady design is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful ever produced by the United States Mint and is one of the most eagerly sought patterns. At the time of their creation, however, the Washlady pieces were not held in as high esteem by contemporary collectors. The style of Liberty's hair, in particular, was widely criticized in that it gave the portrait a somewhat disheveled appearance. David Proskey is credited with the Washlady name as an expression of contemporary ridicule for this design, its first known use coming as part of New York Stamp and Coin's April 1891 sale of the F.W. Doughty Collection written as” …. “ Wash-lady” type : profile I., with enormous head of hair, held together by nothing visible…” The modern term "Society Lady" is a more elegant description for this motif, but examples of this type continue to be most widely known by their traditional name. The Washlady motif appears on pattern dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars of 1879, generally in either silver or copper, although unique white metal impressions are also known for the three largest denominations.

This beautifully toned Gem has cobalt blue, antique gold and lilac undertones to dominant reddish-copper patina. The finish is modestly cameoed, the strike sharply executed and crisp throughout. A coin with superior technical quality and outstanding visual appeal.
