Medal, Plaquette, 1909, Bronze, France. WOMAN WITH TORCH - INAUGURATION OF THE ATHENAEUM CENTRE, Medallist Initials: MB. Size: 45mm x 60mm. Obv. Woman with flowing robes holding lighted torch over edifice (new center) with town n background on hill; Rv. Inscription, Inauguration de L'Athenee Du Centre, 4 Octobre 1909, Morlanwelz Mariemont (town), Raoul Warocque, Fondateur (Founder). The Centre was formed by Raoul Warocque to establish a school of education without undue influence of the Catholic Church. This was a secular institution and the founder gave a speech saying his intent is not to offend Catholic students, but instead to fight clericalism by creating a school based on "free inquiry". Purchased in France.
