Medal, Plaquette, 1924, Bronze, France. MONUMENT TO ZOOLOGIST YVES DELAGE by Francois-Leon Sicard (1862-1934). Semi-circular plaquette 76mm x 58mm, a miniature version of the monument dedicated to Yves Delage at the Biological Station at Roscoff. L'inauguration du monument élevé à sa mémoire, à Roscoff, Finistère, le dimanche 10 août 1924. Yves Delage (1854 – 1920) was a French zoologist known for his work into invertebrate physiology and anatomy. He also discovered the function of the semicircular canals in the inner ear. He also gave a famous speech about the Shroud of Turin. Delage, known as agnostic and anticlerical , estimated in 1902 the probability that the Shroud did not originate from the body of Christ. He also was somewhat of a spiritualist. Under the pseudonym of T. Henvic he published poems and a number of books on hypnagogic states, dreaming and methods of lucid dreaming. Medallist: François-Léon Sicard is considered one of the more talented yet most elusive sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th century. His credits include work on the adornments of the Louvre, and numerous sculptures around the world. Purchased from Hedley Betts.
