Medal, Plaquette, Silvered Bronze, 1927, France. 75th ANNIVERSARY - COMPAGNIE DES MINES DE HUILLE DE COURRIERES, 1852-1927. Medal by A. Mayeur. Founded in 1849, first licensed in 1852. Obv. Two cartridges, right and left, including mining tools surround a central cartouche which shows a miner at work right pickaxe in hand, lit the lamp, a wagon in the background. From both sides the company logo, the letters C and M intertwined, and the dates 1852 -. 1927 Below signed A. MAYEUR; Rv. cartridge showing an aerial view of the mining center, below. a central medallion of St. Barbara, patron saint of miners, in a cartouche olive leaf where one reads the inscription on two lines COMPANY-MINE / COAL-DE COURRIERES. Size: 69mm x 51mm. Medal struck in celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the mining company. Best known for its Mining Disaster or the Courrieres Disaster on March 10, 1906, where 1099 miners were killed in an explosion. Reconstruction of the Mine took place around 1920. The firm was nationalized in 1946 after WWII.
