Afonso VI Counterstamped 50 Reis ND (1663) VG Details (Obverse Scratched, Cleaned) NGC, KM-Unl, LMB-17. 2.92gm. "SO" Counterstamp (XF Strong) on Portuguese 1/2 Tostao from Lisbon mint (cf. KM5). According to LMB, the second-rarest host for this 50 Reis counterstamp, a rarity furthered by the fact that KM has no listing for this particular un-crowed "SO" mark. The noted problems are clear in hand, but easily accepted in light of the heavily circulated nature of these types, not to mention the nice cabinet patina now inhabiting the surfaces.

Afonso VI Counterstamped 100 Reis ND (1663) AU53 NGC, KM27, LMB-20. Crowned "100" counterstamp (AU Standard) on Portugal João IV 80 Reis from the Porto mint. An incredible grade for this counterstamped type, still wearing original luster that ignites the soft pewter patina. Unsurprisingly the finest specimen at NGC, with the next highest example coming in at the VF tier.

Afonso VI Counterstamped 500 Reis ND (1663) XF45 NGC, KM36-38, LMB-30. 21.53gm. Crowned S00 counterstamp (AU Standard) applied on a Portugal João IV 400 Reis (Cruzado) from the Porto mint. Alfonso VI Counterstamped 125 Reis ND (1663) VF Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, KM30, LMB-64, Gomes-10.04. Type IV crowned "125" countermark (UNC Strong), struck on an earlier Portugal Tostao from the Porto mint. An evasive issue and the rarest of the type IV counterstamps, seen only a handful of times crossing the auction block in the last two decades, last seen at Heritage in April of 2010 when one was offered in the Paulistana Collection. Battleship-gray appearances and a generally pleasing aesthetic define this example, saltwater damaged surfaces notwithstanding.

Pedro II Counterstamped 500 Reis ND (1688) AU50 NGC, KM438.1. Crowned 500 counterstamp (AU Standard) applied to a Portugal João IV 400 Reis (Cruzado) from the Lisbon mint (KM52). A true raison d'être for the insatiable numismatist, this spectacularly glossy survivor consists of an older hammered coin, whose legends were later re-struck/milled by the king, Pedro II. A visionary, Pedro modernized the minting process in Portugal by experimenting with cast planchets, different types of presses, and other minting techniques. What he did with the old Cruzados and 1/2 Cruzados of Alfonso VI (his brother) and Joao IV (his father) was an attempt to transform a hammered coin into a milled one, respecting each type by minting the new legends with the respective name of the king who first struck them. This is among the finest examples that we have handled in this fascinating series.
