The oldest Wildman coin in my collection by over 20 years. If references are correct the lit candle in the right hand is a not so veiled threat to his constituents of what may happen if they don't fall in line. Heinrich the Younger had been blamed for having a town burned to the ground in the years prior to this coinage.
Heinrich the Younger
Henry V of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (10 November 1489 – 11 June 1568), called the Younger, (Heinrich der Jüngere), a member of the House of Welf, was Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and ruling Prince of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1514 until his death. The last Catholic of the Welf princes, he was known for the large number of wars in which he was involved and for the long-standing affair with his mistress Eva von Trott.
Obverse: Bust Left
Reverse: Wildman in the center.
If this 3rd edition of SC of German Coins 1501-Present is accurate, the mint may be Riechenberg. Somewhere on that coin should be "stag rampant left holding ingot hook." Or maybe the Goslar mint - some sort of symbol that looks like a necklace (a V shape) with a cactus hanging at the lower part of the V.

This is a much more primitive in appearance Wildman.
Silver Groschen to 1/24 Taler 1573, Goslar. Wild man. Welter 596.
Julius of Brunswick-Lüneburg (29 June 1528 – 3 May 1589), a member of the House of Welf, was Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and ruling Prince of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1568 until his death. From 1584, he also ruled over the Principality of Calenberg. By embracing the Protestant Reformation, establishing the University of Helmstedt, and introducing a series of administrative reforms, Julius was one of the most important Brunswick dukes in the early modern era. Born at the princely court in Wolfenbüttel, Julius was the youngest surviving son of the warlike Duke Henry V of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1489–1568).

Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Rudolf August 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler) 1675 AU58 NGC. Among the finest-encountered of its type, this selection enchants the eye with classic cabinet tone and impeccably struck design elements--down to the minute details atop the Wildman. Typically, the Wildman's face is not this well struck. Scarce in all regards.
Rudolph Augustus (16 May 1627 – 26 January 1704), a member of the House of Welf, was Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and ruled as Prince of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1666 until his death. In 1685 he made his younger brother Anthony Ulrich co-ruler.

This is the oldest full Taler Wildman in my collection. It has a lot of remaining luster but is struck weakly in several areas of both the obverse and reverse.
A return to candle imagery helps give this and others like it the name Light Talers (Lichtaler) although by this point it is considered a less ominous usage.
Obverse: Helmeted 4-fold arms with wildmen supporters, titles of Julius
Reverse: Wildman walking left holding lit candle in right hand, tree trunk in left, date at top in single legend
Reverse Legend: ALIIS. IN. SERVIENDO. CONSVMOR.
Mint: Goslar
Mint Master: Andreas Küne
Ruler: Julius
Note: Dav. #9062. Light Thaler. Variant with divided year in the transcription.
Composition: Silver

Another light taler, this one with more character. The obverse is the better struck side although the original engraving is rather crude.

One more Lichttaler. This one has a distinctive look from the previous issues. This engraver obviously took more time in the appearance of the Wildman.
These talers come from the Goslar mint, which had been in the Vitushof, which belonged to the Riechenberg monastery, since 1552. The silver for the Lichttaler came from Rammelsberg near Goslar.

This is the first Wildman that I ever purchased. Not only does it have the provenance of formerly being in the Eric Newman collection, but the toning is also stunning. One of the best-looking Wildman coins I have ever seen.

Mining Talers are particularly nice, especially when they include 2 Wildman figures. These tend to be very pricey when you can find them. Most are found in high grade which is a testament to their beauty.
