Portrait of Ehrlich looking right, legend below, Zum 14 Maerz 1904, Die Shuler-Mitarbeiter (From Co-workers and students, March 14, 1904); Rv. Blank except maker's mark, "Owarzik Frankfurt". PAUL EHRLICH was a German Jewish physician, bacteriologist, and founder of modern chemotherapy. He was awarded the Nobel prize in 1908 for developing the science of immunology. He recognized leukemia; in 1909 he discovered, together with his co-worker, the Japanese Hata, the mechanism of syphilis and medicine for it, also Salvarsan, and later Neosalvarsan. These were the first medicines that were able to destroy viable pathogens within the human organism.
