Coal. Obv. Conjoined busts of prince and princess looking right, Directors of the Mines conjoined busts looking left, names and dates below; Rv. Concessions des Charbonnages 1803-1903, De Mariemont, et de bascoup, legends, Coal Miner sitting with axe and tools, mining scene. Very attractive design and execution. Size: 50.39mm x 39.53mm. Weight 1.481 Oz. or 42 Grams). Medallist info: Egide (Aegis) Rombaux, 1865-1942, Belgian sculptor. Born in Brussels, son of the sculptor Félix Rombaux. Began to make sculpture while still a youth, studying first under his father, then with De Groote and Desenfans; also attended evening classes under Vanderstappen at the Brussels Academy. Worked as decorative sculptor for public buildings and as assistant to Jef Lambeaux. Afterwards moved to Paris. Won the Prix Godecharle 1887 and Prix de Rome 1891, and lived c.1887-94 in Italy, then again in Paris where he met Rodin. Returned to Brussels in 1895. Member of the Académie Royale de Belgique 1908. Taught at the National Institute of Fine Arts at Antwerp and at the Brussels Academy. His works include monuments, low-reliefs and portrait busts. Died in Brussels.
