Medal, Plaquette, c1930, Bronze, France/Belgium. LE'EFFORT / CONGO BELGE by Antoine Vriens. Size: 50mm x 72mm. Obv. Male Partially Nude on boat pushing forward with stick - Allegory for effort or work; Rv. Awarded to Jean Serrao, 1912-1962, fifty years work in the Congo Belge. In the first half of the 20th century, medals were often awarded to deserving individuals. The awards were given by official institutions or companies. Many artists have been commissioned to design medals on the theme 'l'effort'. It is revealing to find out how the theme was treated by the different artists, from the point of view of concept, composition and style. This plaquette is a refined representation by Antoine Vriens. The effort may not be so impressive as a man pulling a boulder from a hill, but it is linked to skill in this art deco representation of a punter. Antoine Vriens was a Belgian sculptor who was born in 1902. Several works by the artist have been sold at auction, including 'Sitting Nude' sold at De Vuyst 'Old Masters, Modern & Contemporary Art' in 2013. The artist died in 1987. Purchased in Belgium.
