1959 Alaska-Hawaii Statehood, HK-534, R.4, MS65 NGC. Nickel-silver, oxidized, 40 mm. Combined Alaska-Hawaii Statehood, early serial number 36 on edge. These medals were issued privately by Clifford Mishler, Vandalia, MI; designed by R.A. Johnson, Sidney, IA; and struck by Robbins Co., Attleboro, MA. Obverse shows map of Alaska, below JAN. 3/ 1959 in off-center circle to right; 13 stars around on right; at left, around ALASKA/large star/49th/STATE. Reverse shows map of Hawaiian Island chain with names of islands, below AUG. 21/ 1959 in off-center circle to right; 13 stars around on right; at left, around Hawaii/large star/50th STATE. The second edition So-Called Dollars reference reports that 500 pieces of this nickel-silver, oxidized issue were struck. The medium gray fields of this Gem example highlight the lighter gray design elements. Purchased at the First Annual So Called Dollars Fellowship Meeting April 3-6, 2014 in Reno, NV from Jeff Shevlin.
