St. Thomas’s Hospital originated in the thirteenth century in a hospital dedicated to St. Thomas à Becket and built by the canons of the Priory of St. Mary-over-Rhe (St. Mary Overy). On the Dissolution of the monasteries in 1538, Henry VIII took over the hospital; in 1551 Edward VI granted it a Royal Charter. In the last half of the nineteenth century the site was required for a railway and the building was demolished.
One of Peter Kempson's series of London building tokens made for collectors. The series consists of 39 tokens portraying 25 buildings, 3 bridges, and 8 ancient gates of London.
