The original Royal Exchange, opened by Queen Elizabeth, was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. The replacement Royal Exchange was built in 1669 and is the one depicted on the token. It too was destroyed by fire on January 10th, 1838. The current Royal Exchange was then built and opened by Queen Victoria in 1844.
