The Blue School, founded in 1722, was one of the oldest charities in Birmingham. The institution was founded for education of boys and girls. About 160 boys and girls attended the school, while about 15 poor children were housed at the school.
One of Peter Kempson's series of 45 pieces featuring 27 Birmingham buildings made for collectors. In the 19th century medalist John Ottley used the obverse tokens from the series to strike his own version of 26 of the tokens.
