A simple cross stood in the Market Place in Birmingham long before the High Cross shown was built in 1702. The ground floor was used as a market, the upper floor served by judicial courts and as a meeting space. The High Cross was sold by auction in 1784 and was later taken down.
One of Peter Kempson's series of 45 pieces featuring 27 Birmingham buildings made for collectors. In the 19th century medalist John Ottley used the obverse tokens from the series to strike his own version of 26 of the tokens.
