The school was endowed in 1552 by King Edward VI. The original endowment belonged to an establishment called the Guild of the Holy Cross. The first building was demolished in 1707 and the building shown was erected. When this building fell into decay in 1835 it was replaced by a new one.
One of Peter Kempson's series of 45 pieces featuring 27 Birmingham buildings made for collectors. In the 19th century medalist John Ottley used the obverse tokens from the series to strike his own version of 26 of the tokens.
