Owner Comments:
In 1916 the Philippines were a US possession, recently acquired from Spain in the Spanish American War at the turn of the Century. This is thus considered a "US" coin, struck in San Francisco. This is the largest denomination struck for the Philippines in 1916, with no 50 Cent or Peso available for the date. We had one of these in NGC AU Details grade that looked dull and dumpy for a long time to hold the place. It is very pleasing to have this nice bright shiny new looking coin to properly fill the space now. This goes along with coins minted by the US for other countries in 1916 like Cuba, Ecuador, Colombia, and Panama.
9 including this coin in MS63 at PCGS and 12 in higher grades.
NGC has graded just 2 in MS63 and 1 in higher in MS64
There is also a "tilted 6" variety but none of those are graded MS63 or higher at NGC.
PCGS does not appear to mark the distinction
