On December 15, 1915 Yuan Shih-K’ai had himself formally chosen and proclaimed emperor. Opposition developed within China and among various foreign powers. A rebellion broke out in Yünnan and spread to other southern provinces. Opposition was so great that Yuan rescinded the monarchy on March 21, 1916. On June 6th he died.
We have been trying to get a nice mint state example of this coin since 2018. The AU55 coin we had is kind of dark. This one is a lot brighter, and fits in better with the rest of the collection. NGC has only graded two in MS61, and four in higher grades (two each in MS62 and MS63). PCGS has graded 14 others in MS61 plus this one, and 37 in higher grades up to MS64. Between the two firms there are 16 others in MS61 and 41 in higher grades, out of more than 3,500 graded, mostly by PCGS.
