JNDA 02-8. The first version of the 10 yen coin produced under the modern government. When first minted in S26 (1951) it was the largest denomination produced for circulation and is notable by having a reeded edge. This was modified later (see JNDA 02-09) but at least as late as the early 2000s could still be found in pocket change.
The obverse features the 'Phoenix Hall', the main building of the Byodoin Temple in Kyoto. Small ho-ō birds (Japanese 'phoenix') are seen topping either end of the Hall. The issuing authority is above and the date below. The reverse features the date/denomination/laurel wreath.
Diameter 23.5 mm, bronze, weight 4.50 grams.
