Swiss Federal Coins - Specimen Coins

Category:  World Coins
Owner:  Sterlingcoins
Last Modified:  8/4/2015
Set Description
Prior to 1974, Switzerland did not strike proof coins. However, a few early strikes from new dies do exhibit he deep mirrored fields, sharp strikes, and frosty devices associated with proof coins. These coins have been dubed "Specimen" due to their superior charactisics. Because these coins were not intentionally created for collectors (as modern proofs are), there exist no records of their manufacture or mintages. Still, it is undoubtedly fair to say that no more that a few dozen examples exist of of any date. While the half, one, two, and five francs denonimations are the only ones listed in Krause, specimens are known in all Swiss deoninations (even in the cantonial coins)
