This collection features the gold half sovereign (ten shillings) series of Queen Victoria, who still holds the record as longest-reigning British monarch. The owner presents a history of the sovereign and its half unit as coins of the realm, as well as a biography of Victoria herself. Each coin is illustrated and described fully, including it aesthetic qualities and provenance, when known. While the collection is still a work in progress, some of its current highlights include 1847 (NGC MS 64), 1852 (NGC MS 65), 1863 without die number (NGC MS 64) and 1883 (NGC MS 64).

A tremendously alluring example of this Victoria's Type A1 half-sovereign. This superb GEM reveals impeccable detail up to the highest point, with the whole of the surfaces sheathed in silk and a layer of anticked patination that delicately covers both sides. The portrait of Victoria is outstanding, with each wave of her hair fully rendered and crisp, and a quick rotation reveals ample reflectivity that shimmers throughout the fields. The reverse design is truly enviable in its boldness and intense luster, retaining an as-struck appearance. Choice so fine, and in a certified realm of its own making.

Preserved beyond what should be possible for a coin of this age and beauty.
To find an example as beautiful as this, as pristine, and perfect, is beyond rare. Surfaces alive with intense satiny luster, obverse field flashy and reflective. Even the edge is beautiful; each letter is remarkably crisp and high-relief, the space between them brilliant. It should go without saying that MS67 is the highest certification awarded to any coin of this type. Ranked Number One in its category by a hefty margin and absolutely complete, this set is notable for both the amount of information furnished by the owner and the outstanding condition of the coins, all of them NGC-certified. There are seven coins in all, no half sovereigns having been dated 1822. Far and away the most notable entry is the 1821 graded MS 64«, which combines rarity with near gem condition. The highest graded coin is the 1823 (MS 65), but the 1825 (MS 64+) comes in a close second. All are nicely illustrated and quite beautiful.

Britain’s reform coinage that commenced in 1816 included gold sovereigns and half sovereigns the following year. Coinage of the latter denomination ended in Britain during 1915, due to wartime economic conditions. The fascinating history of both these “modern” coins and their pre-1817 ancestors is told in an excellent introductory essay. This amazing set is nearly complete for the 90 slots encompassed. Each is nicely illustrated and comes with very informative text about that date and the particular specimen displayed. There are far too many highlights to list here, but this is a set that’s worth studying in some detail.

We sometimes wonder about the day jobs of Registry participants. In the case of TMS coins, we would bet its director of tourism for the island of Cyprus. TMS, who hails from Cyprus, describes the history and beauty of the island, writing “Should there be any wonder why Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love and beauty, made her home in this island?” The designs of the coins, issued by a new Republic after British rule, highlight the nation’s specialties. The 50 mils, with its bunch of plump grapes, has us wanting to travel to Cyprus for a glass of wine with Dionysus. TMS Coins’ fondness for these coins is readily apparent, having had them graded himself and writing the coins remind him of memories from high school, university, and life.
