My family silver in Guanaxuato

Category:  World Coins
Last Modified:  8/28/2019
Set Description
My ancestor was an Englishman who invested on silver mines at Guanaxuato (now known as Guanajuato), Mexico, between 1829 and 1847. He resided in town between those years when he was devouted to silver production and commerce. The interesting point about this set is that some of these coins were minted with silver from his mines.

Set Goals
The goal of the set is to collect the silver issues from Guanajuato between 1829 and 1847, the time when my ancestor was dedicated to silver mining.

View Coin   MEXICO - 1823-1909 1/2R 1844GO PM NGC MS 61 Very nice uncirculated little coin. At the time of purchase, NGC has graded 1@61 and 1@64.

From the sale's catalogue: "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1844-Go PM. Guanajuato Mint. NGC MS-61.
KM-370.7. Well struck with barely a weakness in the centers and attractive russet toning.
Provenance: Ex: Richard Ponterio Collection."
View Coin   MEXICO - 1823-1909 REAL 1829GO MJ LARGE EAGLE NGC AU 50 Of all the coins on the sale, this one was the one I really wanted to get. Nicely toned, and the obverse has golden tones that really make the eagle look very pretty. It is in great condition and while I will not descend to argue it was undergraded, I believe deserved a better number IMO. Full Libertad and all details very well preserved. At the time of purchase (February 2019) this is the only one in the NGC census, so another Top Pop.

From the sale's catalogue: "MEXICO. Real, 1829-Go MJ. Guanajuato Mint. NGC AU-50.
KM-372.6. Large Eagle variety. Nicely struck with some luster and a hint of iridescence in the toning.
Provenance: Ex: Richard Ponterio Collection".
View Coin   MEXICO - 1823-1909 REAL 1832GO MJ NGC MS 62 Nice little uncirculated real from Guanajuato. At the time of purchase (January 2019) there are 1@62, 1@63, and 2@65.
View Coin   MEXICO - 1823-1909 REAL 1833GO MJ ROUND-TOP 3 NGC XF 45 Silver minors from the Republic period are actually very rare. This one is not an exception. AT the time of purchase (February 2019) NGC has graded 4 coins, 1@45, 1@62, 1@63, and 1@64. Full libertad can be read. Good details. Medal turn.
View Coin   MEXICO - 1823-1909 REAL 1838/7GO PJ NGC MS 63 This coin has lots of lustre and it is in great uncirculated condition. This is remarkable given that minors circulated heavily. At the time of purchase, NGC has graded 2@58, 2@61, 1@62, 2@63, 3@64, and 1@66.

From the sale's catalogue: "MEXICO. Real, 1838/7-Go PJ. Guanajuato Mint. NGC MS-63.
KM-372.6. Well-struck with brilliant surfaces. The bold overdate should boost the desirability even further.
Provenance: Ex: Richard Ponterio Collection".
View Coin   MEXICO - 1823-1909 2R 1847GO PM NGC AU 55 Very nice 2 reales with all the details present. Old scratch on the eagle's right wing. At the time of purchase (February 2019) NGC has only graded this coin, hence Top Pop.

From the sale's catalogue: "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1847-Go PM. Guanajuato Mint. NGC AU-55.
KM-374.8. Well struck and subtly lustrous with mottled brown tone and flashy underlying silvery surfaces.
Provenance: Ex: Richard Ponterio Collection".
View Coin   MEXICO - 1823-1909 4R 1840/30GO PJ NGC VF 30 This is a relatively rare issue. Worn but with no distractions, and the details very clear. At the time of purchase (September 2019) NGC has graded 2 coins, this one and one at 55. PCGS has graded none.
View Coin   MEXICO - 1823-1909 4R 1842GO PJ NGC VF 30 I fell in love with this coin on first sight. Firstly, it is a very rare issue. Secondly, it is really scarce. At this time it is listed on Krause as "Rare" and unpriced as such. The details are all there. Very pretty. At the time of purchase (February 2019) NGC has this one at 30 and 1 at 50.

From the sale's catalogue: "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1842-Go PJ. Guanajuato Mint. NGC VF-30. KM-375.4. Problem free for the grade with mottled olive to gray toning. A highly coveted issue from the "PJ" assayer, listed in the Standard Catalog of World Coins simply as RARE. Provenance: Ex: Richard Ponterio Collection".
