Mexico Libertad Typeset Project

Set Description
This is an attempt to create a Libertad typeset of both gold and silver coins. The Mexican Libertad was first minted in 1981 as a gold coin in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz sizes. The original design was based on the famous gold centenario, with a forward facing Winged Victoria in front of the volcanoes Popacatepetl and Iztaccihuatl on one side, and the Mexican coat of arms on the other. The Winged Victoria is actually the reverse of the coin according to the Banco de Mexico. 1982 saw the first silver coins, minted in 1 oz versions. In 1983 silver 1 oz proofs were introduced, along with gold 1 oz proofs. There were only 88 gold proofs minted that year, making it the smallest mintage by far of any version. No gold proofs were minted again until 1989, when 704 1/2 oz coins were struck. Also in 1989, the mint struck 3,500 platinum 1/4 oz coins, and have not minted any since. In 1991 fractional silver coins were introduced in 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz versions.

No gold BU coins were minted from 1981 until 1991, when 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz versions were introduced. In 1992 fractional silver proofs were introduced, mirroring the BU counterparts. From 1991 to 1994 all sizes of BU gold coins were stuck, but then production ceased until 2000. 2001 saw no BU gold coins struck either. In 1996 the mint changed the design to a full view of the Winged Victory on the pedestal in 3/4 profile view, with the mountains in the background. This is the design that is still in use. 1996 also saw the introduction of 2 oz and 5 oz versions of both BU and proof silver coins. In 2002, proof-like silver kilo coins were introduced. Gold proofs had not been minted since 1989, and in 2004 saw 1000 1/4 oz gold proofs struck. In 2005 production resumed on all sizes of gold proofs. In 2008, kilo silver coins began to be minted in a BU version, and with the exception of 2013 and 2014, have continued to the present.

2015 saw the introduction of a 1 oz silver reverse proof coin, with 2 oz and 5 oz versions starting in 2017. 2017 also saw 1,000 high relief silver kilo coins struck, and as of now this is a one year only minting. Silver antiqued coins were first minted in 2018 in 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz versions. Also in 2018, 1 oz and 1/2 oz gold reverse proof coins were first minted.

Set Goals
The goal is to acquire an example of each type of coin, including all the fractional pieces in gold and silver, as well as the kilo, the reverse proofs, the antiqued versions, die varieties, and the platinum version.

It was the first time I've come across this coin in MS69 anywhere. I very nearly passed it up but knew I would kick myself the rest of my life if I let it go. This is the key to the 1 oz series, with only 67,000 minted, and a population of only 139 in this grade.

View Coin 5 Oz Silver BU MEXICO - 1905 TO DATE 5 Onza 2016Mo Mo SILVER NGC MS 69 This coin was purchased raw and then submitted at the Summer FUN show in 2018. I was pleasantly surprised when it came back MS69. However, I have tried twice now, including the initial submission, to get the detached wing variety added. To me the wing is clearly detached but they did not give the variety designation.

The mintage for the 5 Oz coins in 2016 is 11,400, and the NGC population for MS69 is only 7.
