ANCIENT GREEK EL, AR & AE

Category:  Ancients
Owner:  AVALEIGH
Last Modified:  9/27/2024

Set Description
The Collection comprises Electrum, Silver and base metal (Copper, Bronze, and Lead) coins of the Late Archaic, Hellenic (Classical) and Hellenistic Periods of Greek Antiquity. The Collection is supplemented by contemporary or related coinages of Lydia, Persia and Carthage. With access to silver but lacking gold, the Greek mainland was limited primarily to silver and base metal coinage. The stylistic as well as the technical (smelting and minting) development in time can be appreciated by even a cursory examination of the coins. A more detailed examination reveals that while even early coinage demonstrates craftsmanship, the artistic evolution is quite striking resulting in many cases highly aesthetic miniature metallic works of art.

Set Goals
The Collection has goals of illustrating the Evolution of coinage in the Greek world and the Variety and Diversity of Styles and Aesthetic achievement in Ancient Greek Greek related coinage.
