Set Description
I have always enjoyed large copper coins. My first love will always be US Large Cents. But I am always searching for World coins that remind me of our large cents. The coins of the Portuguese empire are particularly interesting. Of course not all of these are copper but several years ago I came across the 1 Macuta pieces from the early 1800's in Angola and shot me down this rabbit hole.

Set Goals
Much like my other sets the goals are very open ended. This will be filled with pieces that speak to me. Weather they are circulated or uncirculated I want to fill this set with attractive well struck pieces from anyplace in the Portuguese Empire that had coins struck for them. I don't really consider modern coins to be "Portuguese Empire" issues they have been placed at the end of this set.

Carlos I (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈkaɾɫuʃ]; English: Charles I) the Diplomat (also known as the Martyr; Portuguese: o Diplomata and o Martirizado; 28 September 1863 – 1 February 1908) was the King of Portugal and the Algarves. He was the first Portuguese king to die a violent death since Sebastian of Portugal (1578). This occurred in 1908, when D. Carlos was murdered in Lisbon as he travelled in an open carriage with the royal family.

Countermark: Crowned arms
Note: Countermark on 1/2 Macuta, KM#28.
The Obverse shows a crowned globe with the legend:
JOSEPHUS I REX P.ET.D. GUINE

This very large copper 1 Macuta from 1786 was countermarked in 1837 with a deep crowned escutcheon. The countermark doubled the coin’s value.

The Portuguese arrived on the coast of what is now called Angola back in the late 15th Century. By 1575 the Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais had founded Luanda as “São Paulo de Loanda” and confirmed their occupation of the coastline. They were primarily interested in slaves.

From 1575 to 1820 over a million people were taken as slaves to Brazil and North America by the Portuguese... ” For 200 years, the colony of Angola developed essentially as a gigantic slave-trading enterprise”(1) Jesuit priests came too, in the wake of military conquest and slave-taking, bent on wholesale conversion.

View Coin   ANGOLA Copper MACUTA 1814 46 NGC MS 62 BN Purchased in March of 2015 from a Stacks & Bowers Auction. Central design well struck with sharp details. Lustrous with attractive chocolate brown surfaces. This is still the nicest example of this coin that I have seen. I am drawn to crude coins and this piece fits the bill.

With Napoleon's European conquests, her court, then under the direction of Prince Dom João, the Prince Regent, moved to the then Portuguese colony of Brazil. Later on, Brazil would be elevated from the rank of a colony to that of a Kingdom, with the consequential formation of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves
