8. Legal Tender

The basic currency unit is the Pound, or Pound Sterling, the symbol for which is written as £. It is sometimes shown as GB£, or GBP. Since the Great Decimalization of 1971, the pound has been divided into 100 pence, just like the dollar is split into 100 cents. The 8 coins circulating are the £2, £1, 50 pence (p), 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1 penny.

9. Britannia

Britannia is considered the female personification of Britain, symbolizing its ideals and values throughout history. Britannia has appeared on British coinage since 1672, although the Romans were the first to portray her on their coins. Ancient Roman coins depicted Britannia as a fragile and brooding figure, however, over the centuries Britannia has developed into a ‘warrior queen,’ wearing a Corinthians hat, wielding a shield and trident, as symbols of protection and security.

The U.S. Mint has been striking Gold and Silver Eagles ever since 1986. While the Wedge Tailed Eagle series of coins is struck by the Perth Mint in Australia, this design was created by John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. This is the first time in coinage history that a U.S. Mint Chief Engraver has designed a coin for another world mint!

What makes it even more spectacular is that the coins are struck in stunning high relief, giving the birds a fabulous dimensionality reminiscent of a museum-quality sculpture. Each Australia Silver Eagle is struck to a dazzling proof condition, and shows Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The $8 Silver Eagle is five ounce of 99.99% silver. The coins have the Australian government's guaranty of their weight and purity struck right into the surface of the coin.

The 2016 design shows a perched wedge tailed eagle. The Perth Mint’s mintmark can be seen below the eagle. This coin is made of .999 fine silver and weighs 5 Troy oz. In addition to the new design, it has high relief to add even more eye appeal. Mintage of the stunning 2016 high relief silver Wedge Tailed Eagle is limited to 5,000 coins.

One of the world’s most respected third-party grading services, the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), was selected to grade this 2016 5 oz. silver high relief Wedge Tailed Eagle. The experts at NGC carefully examined this coin before assigning it a grade. This 2016 high relief Wedge Tailed Eagle received the highest grade possible, PF70. The grade of PF70 is reserved for proof coins that have no post-production imperfections at 5x magnification. Each Eagle is graded Proof-70 (PR70) and is encapsulated in a holder with a label hand-signed by Mr. Mercanti.
