Set Description
The intention in creating this set was to give an unprecedented side-by-side glimpse of United States proof and mint-state coinage during the year 1942. Each denomination is displayed in both proof and business strike format and identically matched in grade with its counterpart. Comparing the characteristic differences in both formats is fascinating to behold.

The year 1942 was chosen due to its historical nature, as well as its numismatic significance. 1942 was the first year the U.S. entered Word War II. Additionally, 1942 was also the last year proof strikes would be minted for the iconic Walking Liberty Half-Dollar and the Winged Liberty Head/"Mercury" Dime. Further, Washington Quarter, Jefferson Nickel and Lincoln Wheat Cent proofs would not resume proof-strike mintage until 1950. In other words, 1942 would be the last year Proof Sets would contain both the Walking Liberty Half and the Mercury Dime.
