HORNREICH COLLECTION: Medallic History of Christopher Columbus and the World's Columbian Exposition

Category:  Token & Medals
Last Modified:  9/4/2020
Set Description
These are all for sale, please email with offer to hhornre634@aol.com if you have interest. The Medallic History of Christopher Columbus and the Columbian Exposition of 1893 is extensive and complex. The World's Columbian Exposition, (1892-1893), was organized to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's landfall in the New World, and to show the world the enormous progress that had taken place through those four hundred years. The WCE became a defining moment in Chicago's history and the history of the United States as a whole.
When the World's Columbian Exposition opened, only 22 years had passed since the Chicago Fire of 1871; only 28 years had passed since the end of the American Civil War. In the interval, the era of Reconstruction had given way to a Gilded Age characterized by frenetic industrial growth, mass immigration, and class violence as evidenced by Chicago's 1886 Haymarket Square bombing. Experts estimate that over 27.5 million people attended the WCE. As one might imagine, there was a multitude of Medals produced for the Expo, some "Official" Medals struck in Mint Exhibits on the Grounds, others struck privately. The best overview available on the type and classification of the Medals is found in the work by Nathan Eglit, first printed in 1989. Although his work does not provide a rarity guide or a price guide, he does describe each Medal as it related to the WCE, and his "Eglit" assigned medal numbers are still in use today. *Note: Many of the Medals found in this Collection were obtained at auctions and/or from other already established WCE Medal Collections. Additionally, at times there is some overlap between WCE Medals and So Called Dollar Medals. This set is best viewed using the Gallery feature above.

An outrageously beautiful super well stuck example with wonderful full details and no distractions. How can you not include a the 50C piece in a Columbian Expo Set, even if it is not technically a medal? The World’s Columbian Exposition half dollar depicts on its obverse a right-facing portrait of Columbus. Barber’s initial B is at the truncation of the bust. Around the periphery, separated by stars, are the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and COLUMBIAN HALF DOLLAR. The reverse features a port view of the Santa Maria, based on a replica commissioned by Spain. Below are two hemispheres flanked by the date 14 92. The actual date of coinage appears below, either 1892 or 1893. Separated from it by stars is the peripheral inscription WORLD’S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO. Morgan’s initial is cleverly hidden within the rigging of the ship, at the lower right of the mainsail.

History: On August 16, 1892, a group of parishioners of St. Philip and St. James Church, Phillipsburg, NJ met with their pastor, Father Emmett Burke, at his request, to decide how to raise the necessary funds to purchase a statue of Christopher Columbus. The statue was to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the landing of Columbus on San Salvador on October 12, 1492. The V. H. Mullins Company made the statue, which was selected, in Salem, Ohio. They used a design of the famous sculptor Alfons Pelzer.1 It was based on an original painting of Columbus, which is considered to be the greatest likeness of the famous explorer. It was the official Columbus picture adopted by the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and considered by them to be "the most pleasing and historically, the most correct". The 9-foot statue was formed from copper sheets with an internal steel armature for stability. In his left hand Columbus held a globe and in the right a pair of calipers. On his left stood a pedestal on which was a globe with a dove. When the statue became badly deteriorated, it was restored using one of the medals (maybe this one?) so that the likeness could be made more authentic. There may have been up to 4 of these statues, one of which was destroyed in a fire in Chicago in 1893 at the Columbian Exposition.

HK-767 Aluminum. 45mm.ADA REHAN. Irish-born American actress Ada Crehan (1860-1916) was known especially for Shakespearean roles; played over 200 parts in company of Augustin Daly between 1879 and 1899. In those days it was not unusual for boom-towns of West to attract famous theatrical persons in touring companies. A misprint in a program had her name as Ada Rehan and this became her stage name. This medal is likely part of the 1893 World's Columbian Expo. Ada Rehan was the model for the statue that was in the Montana Building at the Columbian Expo which is depicted on the reverse.
