The medals showcased in this collection illustrate religious allegorical themes, religious doctrine, and/or abstract ideas or principles by characters, figures, or events. The set will include examples ranging from Baptismal Scenes, the Vatican, Religion in World & U.S. Expositions, all the way to California Missions and Father Serra. The only limit will be that the medal or token must have some connection to Religion or Religious Expression.

Great Britain, Silver Medal Queen Anne Dated 1704. Queen Anne's Bounty Medal. MI-251/44, 44.7mm. NGC MS62, Cert# 3349830-015. Made by John Croker (signed I C), or (un-Anglicised) Crocker, Johann (1670–1741), a well-known engraver of English coins and medals. Medal has gorgeous antique patina with tons of mint lustre and color. Subtle silvery gold toning, struck in high relief, the portrait by Croker seemingly in marble it's so three-dimensional. Queen Anne's Bounty was a fund established in 1704 to augment the incomes of the poorer clergy of the Church of England. The bounty was funded by the tax (annates) on the incomes of all Church of England clergy, which was paid to the Pope until the Reformation, and thereafter to the Crown. Commerates 300th year of Zwingli first preaching in Zurich. Historical: Huldrych (or Ulrich/Ulricht[a]) Zwingli[b] (1 January 1484 – 11 October 1531) was a leader of the Reformation in Switzerland. Born during a time of emerging Swiss patriotism and increasing criticism of the Swiss mercenary system, he attended the University of Vienna and the University of Basel, a scholarly centre of humanism. He continued his studies while he served as a pastor in Glarus and later in Einsiedeln, where he was influenced by the writings of Erasmus. His refusal to fast and his serving of sausages, along with a sermon that nothing in the Bible required fasting, was considered the start of the Reformation Movement in Switzerland. This was the seventh issue in the Circle of Friends series. Edge: J.K. Davison, Phila.
The Circle of Friends of the Medallion was formed in Manhattan in 1909. They were self-described as ...”a band of artists and lovers of the arts, of both sexes, who hope to encourage in the public a taste for small sculptures and especially bas-relief.” The designs were chosen by a committee and the medals issued by the Circle went to members only, without charge beyond the annual dues. The Circle issued twelve medals each in a limited edition of 500, some of them historical, others expressing abstract ideas. The medals, when issued, were housed in pasteboard holders in books which also included letterpress describing the theme of each medal and information about the sculptor who designed it. Stamped in gold on the cover of the twelve books is a portrait in medallic form of Pisanello, the Italian Renaissance sculptor who first developed the commemorative medal from the coin. The series ended in 1915.

Additional Info: No more than 500 of any of medals were issued. Allan Newman’s number twelve is the scarcest. Victor Brenner’s number four, Motherhood, is the most popular. Paul Manship’s number eleven is the most expensive (sought after by art galleries). Members of the Bahai religion seek issue number seven, of Abdul Baha, since their religion did not sanction portraits.
Edgelettering varies. The first two issues bear a diamond-D mintmark of the Deitsch brothers (later reissues bear a Medallic Art Company name). Davison’s usually spelled out their last name in full. Issue number twelve is, of course, signed Medallic Art Company.

Mercier was a Belgian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of Mechelen from 1906 until his death, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1907. Edward Carter Preston (7 July 1885 – 2 March 1965) [1] was an English artist, born in Liverpool. He was a renowned sculptor and medallist. The artist designed the bronze memorial plaques presented to the families of British servicemen and women who died during the First World War. Another major commission for the artist began in 1931 when the architect Giles Gilbert Scott asked him to produce a series of sculptures for the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. The project was an immense undertaking which occupied the artist for the next thirty years. The work for the cathedral included fifty sculptures, ten memorials and several reliefs. History: Maximilian Kolbe (January 8, 1894–August 14, 1941), also known as Maksymilian or Massimiliano Maria Kolbe and "Apostle of Consecration to Mary," born as Rajmund Kolbe, was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz in Poland.
He was canonized by the Catholic Church as Saint Maximilian Kolbe on October 10, 1982 by Pope John Paul II, and declared a martyr of charity. He is the patron saint of drug addicts,[3] political prisoners,[3] families,[3] journalists,[3] prisoners,[3] and the pro-life movement.[3] Pope John Paul II declared him the "The Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century".[4] During the Second World War, in the friary, Kolbe provided shelter to refugees from Greater Poland, including 2,000 Jews whom he hid from Nazi persecution in his friary in Niepokalanów. He was also active as a radio amateur, with Polish call letters SP3RN, vilifying Nazi activities through his reports. On February 17, 1941, he was arrested by the German Gestapo and imprisoned in the Pawiak prison, and, on May 25, was transferred to Auschwitz I as prisoner #16670. In July 1941, a man from Kolbe's barracks had vanished, prompting SS-Hauptsturmführer Karl Fritzsch, the Lagerführer (i.e., the camp commander), to pick 10 men from the same barracks to be starved to death in Block 11 (notorious for torture), in order to deter further escape attempts. (The man who had disappeared was later found drowned in the camp latrine.) One of the selected men, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out, lamenting his family, and Kolbe volunteered to take his place. During the time in the cell, he led the men in songs and prayer. After three weeks of dehydration and starvation, only Kolbe and three others were still alive. Finally, he was executed with an injection of carbolic acid. Kolbe is one of ten 20th-century martyrs from across the world who are depicted in statues above the Great West Door of Westminster Abbey, London. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 10 October 1982, in the presence of Gajowniczek. Auschwitz-Birkenau (Konzentrationslager Auschwitz ) was the largest of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Located in southern Poland, it took its name from the nearby town of Oswiecim (Auschwitz in German), situated about 50 kilometers west of Kraków and 286 kilometers from Warsaw. Following the German occupation of Poland in September 1939, Oswiecim was incorporated into Germany and renamed Auschwitz. The complex consisted of three main camps: Auschwitz I, the administrative center; Auschwitz II (Birkenau), an extermination camp or Vernichtungslager; and Auschwitz III (Monowitz), a work camp. The first two of them have been on the World Heritage List since 1979. There were also around 40 satellite camps, some of them tens of kilometers from the main camps, with prisoner populations ranging from several dozen to several thousand.[1] The camp commandant, Rudolf Höß, testifed at the Nuremberg Trials that 3 million people had died at Auschwitz during his stay as a commandant. Later he decreased his estimate to about 1.1 million. The death toll given by the Soviets and accepted by many was 4,000,000 people. This number was written on the plaques in the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. The Museum revised this figure in 1990, and new calculations by Dr. Franciszek Piper now place the figure at 1.1 million[2] about 90 percent of them Jews from almost every country in Europe.[3] Most of the dead were killed in gas chambers using Zyklon B; other deaths were caused by systematic starvation, forced labor, lack of disease control, individual executions, and medical experiments.
