Set Description
The Sterling Series of South Africa or the Union Series as it is better known as, began in 1923 and ended in 1960 when South Africa became an independant Republic. During these years there were 3 monarchs that reigned which made for several obverse design changes on the coinage struck in South Africa. Furthermore there were certain reverse design changes for one or other reason which are explained further herein. The result is a custom set showing each of the obverse or reverse design changes throughout the series and which comprises 90 coins including the differing copper colours in the lower denominations. This set would not have been possible without the help of Union coin expert Alex Urizzi and his tireless research into the entire series.

Set Goals
The set is complete and therefore no further goal is required save for perhaps improving on certain grades.

View Coin   SOUTH AFRICA 1/4P 1937 S.africa NGC MS 64 BN In 1937 King George VI was crowned and therefore his effigy had to be placed on the obverse of all empire coinage. Interestingly he faces the same direction as King George V which would seem incorrect since every change in monarch was supposed to include a change in the direction in which such monarch faces on empire coinage. It is not incorrect because Edward VIII was crowned before George VI and his effigy would have faced right and opposite to George V but due to his very short reign & subsequent abdication no coins were struck with his effigy for South African coinage. This meant that in order to keep with the correct tradition George VI would have to then face left which is the same as George V. The obverse design shows the uncrowned head of King George the VI.
