Purchased in the 13 Jan 2016 Heritage World Coins Auction (Dallas Auction #3045), Lot 33736.

Described in the auction catalog as: Anne Shilling 1708 MS64 PCGS, Royal mint, KM521.1, S-3610. Essentially Gem, with a striking portrait of the Queen drenched in radiant electric blue and russet tone. Visually engaging and with a desired technical quality to match.

ESC-1147, lovely toning with lots of remaining luster. Some adjustment marks on the obverse through the bust, but not distracting (I actually find them charming). The toning covers the obverse and reverse, with some areas of interesting "pull-away" toning.

Purchased on 6/5/2012. This was my birthday present to myself for the year 2012. The toning on this one just leaves me speechless. The obverse (bust) side of the coin exhibits some pinks and blue in the periphery, while the reverse is painted in tones of almost every color of the rainbow. A true delight of a coin to view in hand.

Total mintage: 5,005,000

Even with a relatively high mintage, NGC has graded only 6 coins and PCGS has graded only 5. Of the total 11 coins graded by NGC or PCGS, the two highest graded examples are graded AU58 (this is the one from PCGS, and one other from NGC) and 5 graded AU55 (3 from NGC and 2 from PCGS). The other 4 examples are graded XF45 or lower.

The coin itself features the bust of King Carlos IV of Spain (reigned from 1788-1808). On the reverse legend the monogram 'LIMAE' is represented on the left in the inscription resembling "ME". This is the mintmark indicating the coin was produced at the mint in Lima, Peru. This is followed by '8 R' which indicates the denomination of 8 Reales. The subsequent I and the J are the initials of the assayers at the Lima Mint during the time the coin was minted (Ignacio Zenón Gélves and Juan Martínez de Roxas who worked together from 1787-1803).

The term “Bergrechnungsmarke” is listed in: Wolfgang Hasselmann: Marken und Zeichen Lexikon, Lexikon für die im deutschsprachigen Raum aus Metall geprägten Marken und Zeichen. Bergrechnungsmarke is described as (translated): 'Tallies used in mining to account for delivered ore, waste material or for any other work. Served as a basis to determine the wages of miners.'

Marken und Zeichen LexikonThis “Marken und Zeichen Lexikon” was issued as a CD-ROM. It consists of: Lexikon A – Z (p. 1 - 1604), Background information (p. 1605 – 1976) and Tables (1 – 234). Thousands of tokens are illustrated. ISBN-10: 3936059284.

The token is also illustrated in the Lexikon where the following description is given: “Beharrlichkeit und Klugheit fesseln das Glück, (Harz, um 1805)” Which can be translated as: "Perseverance and wisdom shackle Luck", (Harz region of Germany, issued about 1805). The legend is nicely depicted on the token by a cat lying in wait (perseverance) and an owl (wisdom) sitting on a wheel (wheel of fortune).

No further information about this token is given in the Lexikon. I found several references to his token. One of these is in: Münz- und Medaillen-Kabinett des Grafen Karl zu Inn- und Knyphausen, Hannover 1872, Supplement 1875. (CS9301) under the heading “Bergrechnungsmarke”.

The description is as follows:

Bergrechnungsmarke
The token is described as made of silver, the weight is given as 3/16 loth, which equals 2,92 gram. Three different dies are recorded.

As the token is made of silver it will not have been used by the miners. It likely is either an off-metal strike or a special issue for the directors or administrators of the mine.

A lovely example of the Ferdinand VII type. Ex CRO (Jan 2017). The strike is good, and the peripheral toning is very attractive. Many of these come with weak strikes, particularly on the reverse crown. While graded AU55, this coin is more attractive than many blast white (dipped) MS62 and MS63 examples graded by both PCGS and NGC.
