I have a competitive set of Proof Westward Journey Nickels. In my set at home, I include this 2003 nickel along with the 2006 nickel in that collection. They bracket the Westward Journey's nicely. BTW - I can't explain the color differences between the two images . . . they were done at the same time on the same scanner . . .

This nickel is composed of 90 percent silver. The 2003 obverse features the traditional profile of Jefferson. It’s the last nickel with this design. Monticello, Jefferson's home, is on the reverse.

Westward Journey #1 . . . The obverse is the classic Jefferson design by Felix Schlag that we all know and love. The reverse is based on the Peace Medals that were to be presented to Native Americans within the Louisiana Purchase as a sign of goodwill (hmmm…). It shows the hand of a Native American and the hand of an European-American clasped in a handshake below a crossed pipe and tomahawk. The words "Louisiana Purchase" and the date “1803” are inscribed on the coin.

Westward Journey #2 . . . The obverse on this one is also the classic Jefferson design by Felix Schlag. The reverse is a depiction of the Keelboat that was used for Lewis & Clark’s famous expedition. Lewis and Clark are both seen on the deck of this 55’ long boat that could be sailed, rowed, poled, or pulled from the bank through the water. It was used on the Ohio and Missouri River portion of their expedition. The words “Lewis & Clark” are inscribed underneath.

Westward Journey #3 . . . In 2005, a new obverse design was introduced. It featured a right facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson and the word “Liberty” in Jefferson’s handwriting. The reverse features a Buffalo. Great numbers of the buffalo were documented by Lewis & Clark. The buffalo was one of the most important resources to the Native American populations who used it for food, clothing, and shelter.

Westward Journey #4 . . . The obverse features the new right facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson. The reverse features a view of the pacific ocean of the PNW coast and the words from Clark’s journal entry “Ocean in view! O! The joy!” It had taken the expedition over a year to reach the Pacific Ocean.

This is my original 2006 Proof Nickel that I replaced with the PF70. Just hanging on to it for now.

The 2006 obverse features another new view of Jefferson . . . face on. It’s the first US coin that the bust of the President isn’t shown in profile. Monticello is back on the reverse, but the quality of the reverse is supposedly more detailed and sharper than the old Monticello
