Owner's Description

This rare denarius depicts Emperor Geta (189-211 AD) like his father, Septimus Severus, as bearded and mature, worthy to lead the Empire. It’s rare because he never made it to old age, murdered by his own brother, Caracalla, who then ordered elimination of all portraits, memorials, and even coinage with Geta’s image. The coin, which was minted in 210 AD while Geta was co-Augustus (along with his father and brother) also conveys Imperial propaganda of a ruling family united against the Britons in early 3rd century AD. In reality, after their father’s death in 211 AD, the brothers shared a dual reign that lasted a brief ten months, as they obstructed one another and built up rival factions.
