Owner's Description

Roman Empire Elagabalus AD 218 - 222 AR Antoninianus RIC 67: Sear #7511 AU - Strike 3/5 - Surface 4/5 Census - NGC does not provide census info on ancient coins :>( Obv. Rad., dr. and cuir. bust of Elagabalus r.: Legend IMP CAES ANTONINVS AVG Rev. Fides Militum enthroned l., holding eagle and standard, a second standard set in ground to l.: Legend FIDES EXERCITVS The emperor was born with the names Varius Avitus Bassianus sometime between the autumn of 203 and the spring of 204. His mother, Julia Soaemias, was a niece of the emperor Septimius Severus' wife Julia Domna. The ascension to the throne by Elgabalus was entirely due to his grandmother's will to see the downfall of Macrinus. Julia Maesa clearly held emperor Macrinus responsible for her sister's death and now sought revenge. With Macrinus losing support with his peace deeply unpopular settlement with the Parthians, the time seemed for an attempt of overthrowing him. A rumor now was spread by Julia Soaemias herself, that Elagabalus had actually been fathered by Caracalla. If the memory of Caracalla was much cherished in the army, then support for his 'son' Elagabalus was now easily found. Within a month all the Roman armies in the East went over to Elagabalus Elagabalus is best understood as a teenager who was raised near the luxury of the imperial court and who then suffered a drastic change of fortune brought about by the sudden deaths -- probably within one year -- of his father, his grandfather and his cousin, the emperor Caracalla. Thrust upon the throne, Elagabalus lacked the required discipline. For a while, Romans may well have been amused by his "Merry Monarch" behavior, but he ended up offending those he needed to inspire. His reign tragically demonstrated the difficulties of having a teenage emperor. My cost was $78
