Medieval Armenia It is not known if this coin was struck under Kiurike I or his grandson Kiurike II thus the range in dates covering the end of one century and the beginning of the next - 10th/11th Cent.AD Bronze Follis Ch VF* - Strike 4/5 - Surface 4/5 Census - NGC provides no census data on this coin :>( This coin is both rare and numismatically important. It is rare because it is just the 19th specimen of this coin known to exist and it is also the finest known specimen as well as a unique die variety. These 19 coins are numismatically important because they are the first coins minted within Armenia proper as well as being the first coins struck using the Armenian alphabet. This coin is believed to be from Lori, a region in northeastern Greater Armenia, and most likely was struck in the city of Tashir. The obverse shows a typical Byzantine representation of Christ. The reverse has an Armenian inscription "May God aid Kiurike the Kouropalates" and shows that the issuer claimed the title Kouropalates ("charge of the palace"), a rank awarded by Byzantine emperors to vassal rulers of Armenia. I had no idea what I had acquired when this coin came into my possession. It was NGC that informed me of the numismatic importance of this coin to whom I can only say thank you. My cost $0 (This coin was part of a box lot purchase. Through the sale of the other coins in this lot I have more than recovered my cost for the group). However it is by far and away the valuable coin in my entire collection.
