Kingdom of Macedon Alexander III (The Great), 336 - 323 BC Drachm Sear #6731 Grade is Ch XF, Strike 5/5, Surface 3/5 Census - NGC does not provide census info on ancient coins :>( Obv. Hd. of young Herakles r., clad in lion's skin Rev. Zeus enthroned l., holding eagle & sceptre; his l. leg drawn back; on r. greek text (which this program does not display); in field to l., Hermes stg., holding caducues When this coin was struck Macedonia occupied a land area that now would include modern Macedonia, modern Bulgaria and the parts of Northern Greece that are below Macedonia and Bulgaria today. However under a young Alexander the Great Macedonia grown to rule basically an area going from Spain (both sides of the Mediterranean Sea) to India. His exploits are unbelievable. It must be understandable why I so dearly want a coin related to this individual. Because Alexander III introduced his coinage to all the civilizations he conquered he in effect produced the first "Euro." His coinage was used and more importantly accepted everywhere. This had to help in trade between the various areas under his control as well as those areas bordering areas under his control. So when he died his coinage was continued for an unbelievable period of time simply because everyone knew it and accepted it. This coin is designated as an early posthumous issue implying (I believe) 323 to 300 BC (close but no cigar). For me it was difficult to include ancient coins in my collection without including a silver coin of Alexander the Great, I only wish it had been issued during his life time. A drachm is the third largest regular issue Greek coin with the tetradrachm being the largest regular issue. My cost was $137.50
