Roman Republic L. Titur. Sabinus c.89BC AR Denarius Cr #344/2: Sear #251 Coin grades Ch VF - Strike 3 of 5 - Surface 5 of 5 Census - NGC does not provide census info on ancient coins :>( Obv. Shows the bare head of King Tatius r. with palm-branch before and SABIN behind Rev. Shows Tarpeia facing, buried to her waist in shields, trying to ward off two soldiers who are about to cast their shields on her, star within a cresent moon above, L TITVRI in ex. The story behind the reverse design. The legend tells that while Rome was besieged by the Sabine king Titus Tatius. Tarpeia, daughter of the commander of the citadel, Spurius Tarpeius, approached the Sabine camp and offered them entry to the city in exchange for "what they bore on their left arms". Greedy for gold, she had meant their bracelets, but instead the Sabines threw their shields—carried on the left arm—upon her and she was crushed to death beneath the weight. Her body was then hurled from the Tarpeian Rock, which became known as the place of execution for Rome's most notorious traitors. The Sabines were however unable to conquer the Forum, its gates miraculously protected by boiling jets of water created by Janus. Simply a nice example of a denarius of the Roman Republic.
