Owner's Description
Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zurich. The history of Zurich goes back to its founding by the Romans, who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum. The Roman castle remained standing until the 7th century. A Carolingian castle, built on the site of the Roman castle by the grandson of Charlemagne, Louis the German. In 1218 with the extinction of the main line of the Zähringer family Zurich attained a status comparable to statehood. During the 1230s, a city wall was built, enclosing 38 hectares, when the earliest stone houses at the Rennweg were built as well. The Carolingian castle was used as a quarry, as it had started to fall into ruin. This is a very brief history on the origins of Zurich. It is been a major player in almost all parts of Switzerlands history and would require a much larger writeup than is necessary for this presentation on its 1892 Shooting Medal. This is a very beautiful medal. This is the silver shooting medal prepared for the 1892 Shooting Festival held in Zurich Richter: 1752a, Martin: 1038, Krause: 359 Designers: Bovy/Freytag 48mm Silver Census – NGC does not provide population info on items such as this.
